How to Play

01

Two wheels

Each player controls one wheel. You can only spin forwards or backwards—no jump, no turn.

02

Work together

Coordination is everything. To change direction, both hamsters need to coordinate—e.g. one spins forward, the other back. Use brake (Q/E or RB/LB) and communicate to get through obstacles.

03

Shake when stuck

If you get wedged, use Shake: Ctrl (keyboard) or X (gamepad) to free yourself.

04

Sync in co-op

Press B (gamepad) or C (keyboard) for the in-game countdown. It avoids Discord/voice lag so you and your partner can jump or move at the same time.

Controls

Co-op uses gamepads only. For online play, both players need the latest version. Keyboard layout shown is QWERTY—on AZERTY we recommend using gamepads for co-op until the Steam demo adds control remapping.

Quick Tips

Essential tips to get you started

Gentle Taps

Use gentle taps instead of holding—gives you more precision on narrow platforms.

Sync with Countdown

Press B (gamepad) or C (keyboard) for the in-game countdown to sync movements with your partner.

Brake to Stabilize

Use brake (Q/E or RB/LB) after landing to stop momentum and restabilize.

Stay Calm

Matching timing matters more than speed. The game is hard by design—take breaks!

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm on a high-end Nvidia GPU (for example RTX 5090) and only see a black screen. What do I do?

This is a known issue with the latest Nvidia drivers affecting some Godot games. There are two workarounds: (1) roll back your Nvidia driver to the version released in February 2026, or (2) run the game with DirectX 12 by opening a terminal in the game folder and running: Hamsteria_Windows.exe --rendering-driver d3d12. On first launch with this flag the screen may stay black with music for up to a couple of minutes while shaders compile—this is expected, just wait.

Can I remap controls or use two players on one keyboard (for example on AZERTY)?

The itch.io demo does not support in-game control remapping, including full local co-op on a single keyboard. For now we recommend using two gamepads for co-op. The upcoming Steam demo will add control remapping so AZERTY and other layouts are better supported.

How long is the game?

A smooth run to credits is often around 1–2 hours; the developer has said that's more of a minimum. Many first-time or co-op playthroughs take 4–6 hours or more, so don't worry if you're taking longer.

What platforms is it on?

Windows and Linux only. Available now on the official itch.io page (link above).

How do I turn or change direction?

There is no separate turn button. To change the direction you're facing, both hamsters need to coordinate—for example, one spins forward while the other spins backward. Communication is key.

Can I play online co-op?

Yes. Online co-op is supported and has been praised during playtests for its stability. Make sure both players are on the latest version.

I'm stuck. What do I do?

Use Shake: Ctrl (keyboard) or X (gamepad). In co-op, press B (gamepad) or C (keyboard) for the in-game countdown—it avoids Discord/voice lag so you and your partner can move at the same time.

Will Hamsteria come to Steam?

Yes! Hamsteria is coming to Steam. The itch version will be the Steam demo with planned improvements (camera fixes, new music, unlockable hats, interactables, netcode). A full 6-8 hour game is in development. Release date TBD—wishlist on Steam so you don't miss it!

Is there speedrunning / community?

Yes. Join the developer's Discord for speedrunning and discussion (link in footer).

Are there any Japanese streamers or Vtubers playing Hamsteria?

Yes. For example, Chitama (ちーたま) from Vspo! (ぶいすぽっ!) has a co-op playthrough—see the first video above. More community streams are linked on the developer's Discord.

How big is the game download?

Only about 92MB. It's a very lightweight download that installs quickly.

Does the game have checkpoints?

Yes! The game has frequent checkpoints and auto-saves. If you fall or get stuck, you'll respawn at the last checkpoint. You can also reload from an earlier point: Pause → Saved Checkpoints.

Can I reload from an earlier checkpoint?

Yes. Open the pause menu and choose Saved Checkpoints to reload. Use this if the game feels unstable or buggy after many respawns.

Can I play Hamsteria on Mac?

Hamsteria is not officially supported on Mac. Some players run it via Whisky; single player may work, but online co-op can be laggy (the game uses P2P). The Steam release may bring optimizations.

What's the hardest part of the game?

Many players find the Cylinder section the hardest. The key is to use brake frequently, adjust your angle before each rotation, and go slow. The last levels are also intentionally very challenging.

Any tips for the Seesaw sections?

Sync with the countdown (press B), then both move together. Brake when you reach each bridge segment. If the seesaw tips too far, one player should brake while the other adjusts. See our full Guide for more strategies.

Is there controller/gamepad support?

Yes, gamepads are fully supported and recommended for co-op play. They give better analog control than keyboard, making precision sections easier.
